Difference between Mirror Finish, Polished and Brushed

Mirror finish

It is highly reflective and created by polishing the stainless steel. This polishing process enhances appearance and consistency which makes cleaning easier. It also hides the after-effects of welding and surface damage.

It is done by mechanically treating the surface with a series of progressively finer abrasives. On the other hand a special rolling procedure is utilized which can simulate mechanical abrasion appearance. For this stage, it is important to remove deep scratches as any surface defects will be visible on the finished product. The last process involves buffing the surface for 5-10 minutes to make a mirror-like, highly reflective finish.

Mirror finishing improves corrosion resistance and eradicates crevices where corrosive particles can lodge themselves.
Its common applications include mirrors, ornamental trim, clean rooms, column covers, wall panels and reflectors.

Polishing

It is a type of surface finish applied by utilizing various abrasive machining processes. It is a machining process which is used in various industries from small parts of precision instruments to large products such as an aircraft.
Within metal architecture, polished finish has been selected for various places from curtain walls, interiors and exteriors, fittings, and monuments for its ability to accommodate various designs.

Brushed

Brushing the stainless steel sheet offers a particular look with a muted luster and a pattern of fine parallel lines. It has strong decorative plead without being too reflective, because too much reflectiveness can be unacceptable. For example, excessively reflective stainless steel accents on a building may be blinding in bright sunlight. The disadvantage to this finish are reduced corrosion resistance, because the grooves of the finish are permitting to rust. This finish is created by sanding the stainless steel sheet in one direction with a 120-180 grit belt, accompanied by softening with 80-120 grit medium non-woven belt.

Surface Finish

Finish Description
2B Smooth finish, reflective grey sheen. Most widely used surface finish.
Bright Annealed (BA) Cold rolled, annealed in a controlled atmosphere to retain a highly reflective finish.
Dull Polish (DP) Selected for ease of cleaning, brushed look, non-reflective, used extensively in the catering industry, also push plates and kick plates.
Hot Rolled (HR) Scaled finish, ideal if surface finish is not a key concern.

Its common applications include:

  • Air conditioners
  • Architecture
  • Automotive design
  • Home appliances
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Water heaters
